BookReader App Reviews

84 Customer Reviews:

I use BookReader on my MacBook Pro 13" Retina and the results are magnificent. I become involved with books in a way I never thought possible with an electronic device. For example, I quickly became engrossed in "Adam Bede" as never before, with pages flowing by and an excellent level of comprehension. The configuration options provided with BookReader are key to this. What I miss are: -- No backup options -- No IPad version -- No duplicate book prevension warning The special virtues of BookReader would be lost on an IPhone or IPod Touch, but definitely recommend an IPad version.

The applications working just like it is advertised; I had a minor glitch with embeding images, but the problem was solved after a couple of e-mails sent to the developer. I would definetely recommend installing the app to everyone fond of reading on a Mac.

Elegant, smooth, and functional, nothing else for the mac comes close. Developer is very responsive, support is first-rate! My best purchase for my mac so far, e-reading has never been so enjoyable!

BookReader is one of the better e-book readers available for the Mac. There is a lot to like, especially control of line spacing. For those who are merely reading, this is a good environment. Not being able to read DRM-crippled e-books in third party software should bother no one; Apples iBooks (coming with OS X 10.9) has a monopoly on that capability. However, the interface makes no provision for the user who is using e-books for reference while writing or communicating with others. The user must somehow work around the unchangeable twin page layout. Even with a large display, I find that difficult enough that I have made do with less sophisticated e-readers that at least have an option for single page display, so as to have room for the windows of several other applications. Additionally, I find it helpful, especially when making text selections, to have a scrolling mode available. This eliminates frequently having to highlight or copy part of a text, flip the page, then select and highlight or copy again. Thirdly, I prefer to have the option of ragged right with no hyphenation, which I believe makes for better eye movement and reading comprehension, not to mention aesthetics.

I tried most of the eBook reader apps and finally settled on this one. I prefer to have full control over my file system and dont like all the restrictions iDevices impose. This app is perfect on a retina Mac. With this app, I actually prefer reading on my Mac to the iPad. They keyboard serves as a stand so I can place it anywhere. For night reading in bed, I put it on my chest and use Nocturne (Google it) for night mode. Works perfect. After I bought this, I decide I didnt even want the iPad and gave it to my daughter. Highly recommended.

* Needs a shortcut for highlighting. For example, holding down CMD and dragging to highlight text. Requiring a right click to highlight gets annoying. Should have menu commands for highlighting with specific colors or taking notes, so user can assign custom shortcuts using the Keyboard preferences pane. * Needs a way to sync annotations between Macs, using iCloud or Dropbox.

It should be easy to turn off the default graphical likeness to a paper-based book. Ideally, the paper-based book appearance would be a non-default option.

This e-book reader is the best one that I have tried. The level of customization is great, you can change pretty much anything in terms of the layout of the text on the page. Including the great background colour options, really good for people that prefer to read of cream coloured paper. Over all I would defiantly give this 5 stars and recommend it to anyone looking for a great e-book reader for their mac.

I use this for study and learning. It is good for reading books, highlighting things and making notes re the highlighted bits, and bookmarking, but the search function in large books is quite slow compared to the same books that I saved on my old PC using a CD and then searched them for words and phrases.

This is a great app. The best in this category. The only thing that would make it better, perfect. Would be an iOS app that synced pages and bookmarks with it.

Excellent app

Great for having all my manuals in one place… can easily paste on an icon on each manual so I find what I want quickly at a glance.

This was as easy as any reader Ive tried. No grief, no glitches, intuitive, what more do you need? Be sure to note that this will not read DRM titles.

I bought this version because I am in the process of finalizing several books for release and I used this for a testing platform and for comparison to several other readers to be sure my formatting displayed corectly. I was a able to therefore compare Bookreader in several ways. I grew to appeciate this app more and more and I find that it would be the one I would use myself to read a book. There are some errors, however, which are in need of correction. One is that some pages don’t display the text fully on the right margin, cutting off a partial character from top to bottom. It doesn’t happen on every page. The other affected me more. The links I provided to other sited (mostly my own) didn’t work but did on every other product I tested. This must be fixed. Overall, I would rate it high but not perfect. The free version is more buggy and should be avoided.

Fabulous eBook reader! I prefer BookReader over Kindle and iBooks. With BookReader you feel more like you’re reading a conventional book, whereas the other readers seem more web-based. The other readers are fine; don’t misunderstand me. But BookReader is a delight and flawless. I wish they made a version for Windows. By way of background, I am the publisher of a small imprint, K-Selected Books. Besides this, I’m an author of numerous conventional books. And, if it means anything to this review, I’m a retired university professor for whom publishing was a way of life. Calvin Luther Martin, PhD
